Too Hardcore

  • May. 18th, 2008 at 10:42 PM
bang
I was booked for a signing at a local bookstore and just heard that they decided to cancel because they felt my book was “too hard-core.”

Cue the audience chant: “SHE’S HARD-CORE! SHE’S HARD-CORE!”

It’s funny because I was expecting a lot more of this sort of thing, especially when I paired up with Sue Ann Jaffarian, and this is the first time anything like this has happened.

In other, more geeky and far less hard-core news, I had late night visit from this beautiful hummingbird impersonator:

I had to gently capture her in a Tupperware container and take her back outside. They really do look almost exactly like hummers when in flight.

I had originally planned to include a Sphinx moth in my tattoo backpiece but never found an image that I like. Now maybe I’ve got one.

I don't suppose you wish to inform your loyal reading public what store this was, do you? I had one store refuse to carry my first novel - although at one point they considered carrying it with a warning sticker saying "adults only" or something similar on it. I had my hopes up. I'm sure that would have helped sales. No such luck though.

Wimps! Fools! Hardcore is at least one of the many things we like about you.

Too hardcore? You should thank them for the compliment.

Gah...censorship at its finest. Oh wait, government censorship is censorship at it's finest.

I love hummingbird moths. My mother had a certain flower at her house that attracted them. It took a long to figure out what they were, but they do look like hummingbirds in flight when they feed.

ah, they can't handle passionate -- oh wait, they 'spinned' it hard-core. feh!

beautiful image. The lunar moths can be fairly rare. You're lucky to have seen one.

thanks for sharing.

Canceled reading
I'm sorry to hear about the canceled reading. Sure, it makes a good story, but it's probably a drag, too, especially in this time of consolidation of book distribution and attendant catering to the most conservative of tastes. I mean, you have a living to make. If it's any consolation, I read the opening of "Hoodtown" on a large online retailer's site this week, and you rule. I'm getting that book.

There's such a thing as too hard-core? Really? Huh. Sounds like a challenge.

Sorry they canceled the reading.

hard core?
"They decided to cancel because they felt my book was “too hard-core.”

First reaction: WTF?

Second reaction: Well at least they read your book.

What I also see as troubling is some blog buddies with agents are all lamenting the changes their agents are forcing.. errr.. "suggesting" they make to the MS - basically all character-related stuff to make the character more white-bread, mainstream, "popular" - translation: less edgy, unique and interesting.

Scary.
